LEXINGTON, Ky. – As the region braces for the coldest nights of the season, Brother Thomas Caudill is taking action to assist those in need. Each evening, he and his team from the Catholic Action Center’s Compassionate Caravan are actively working to help the unhoused population of Lexington.
With approximately 90 motel rooms available for those without shelter, there remains a waiting list of around 400 individuals seeking assistance. Brother Thomas emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating, “If we can get them through this night, then we’ll help get them through the next.”
The Compassionate Caravan is equipped with a variety of donated supplies, including hand warmers, socks, gloves, toboggans, jackets, and sleeping bags. Last Thanksgiving, the team managed to feed 600 people, and their nightly efforts continue throughout this week, providing both food and clothing to the community.
“Just pray for us that we can find everybody because if we don’t, somebody might not make it,” Brother Thomas said, highlighting the critical nature of their mission. His outreach goes beyond just providing items; he also offers a compassionate presence, praying and connecting with those on the streets.
One of the primary goals of the team is to ensure that the community comes together to address these needs. Brother Thomas actively engages with individuals, urging them to take the necessary supplies to stay warm. “We’re going to make it through winter, alright?” he reassures.
