Community Mourns the Loss of Melvin Edgar White Jr.

Sweeden, Kentucky – The community is remembering Melvin Edgar “Mel” White Jr., who passed away on September 29, 2024, at the UK Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington. He was 64 years old.

Originally from Valdosta, Georgia, White served in the United States Army, partaking in the 509th Infantry and serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. His military service is a testament to his dedication and bravery, marking a significant period in his life.

White was born to the late Melvin Edgar White Sr. and Algia Raulerson White. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sonya. In his passing, he leaves behind his wife, Dorothy Wiser Mann White, three sons—Eric White from Ohio, and Robert and Bret White both residing in Sweeden—and two daughters, Kristin White and Katie Allen from Ohio. Additionally, he is survived by a brother, Jimmy White of Georgia, along with six grandchildren.

A celebration of life service is expected to be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to gather in honor of White’s memory. The arrangements are coordinated by Gravil Funeral Home, which serves the local community.

As local residents reflect on his life, many remember White as a steadfast figure in the community who touched the lives of those around him. His legacy as a veteran and a devoted family man will be cherished and remembered fondly by all who knew him.
