Community Unites for First-Ever Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in Lexington, Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A vibrant display of pink will fill the streets surrounding Baptist Health Hamburg this Saturday morning as the community comes together for the first-ever ’Breast Cancer Awareness Walk’, organized by Baptist Health Lexington. The event aims to honor patients, survivors, and families affected by breast cancer.

The walk, scheduled to start at 9 a.m., will offer participants the choice of walking one or two miles around the healthcare facility. It provides an opportunity for community members to engage in physical activity while supporting a vital cause during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In addition to the walk, attendees can look forward to refreshments, raffles, and a panel discussion focused on breast cancer, including topics on prevention and treatment options. Peggy Wheeler, a Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator at Baptist Health Lexington, emphasizes the importance of awareness, noting that breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. Data from the American Cancer Society indicates that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This year alone, there are projections for more than 313,000 new cases.

Wheeler highlights the significance of staying informed about family health history as a proactive measure against breast cancer. “With Thanksgiving coming up, it’s a perfect time, while you’re with your family, to find out a little bit about your family history,” she stated, underscoring that this knowledge can be incredibly beneficial.

For those who wish to support the cause without participating in the walk, all community members are encouraged to gather at the Cancer Center at Baptist Health Hamburg. Ample parking will be provided for all visitors attending the event.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Walk serves as a vital reminder of the importance of community support and education in combating breast cancer and promoting overall health.
