Central Kentucky Hit by Another Winter Storm

Central Kentucky, including the spirited city of Lexington, has recently been blanketed with a fresh layer of snow, indicating that winter is still holding on tight. Just when you thought the snow had taken a break, a second winter storm rolled through from Friday to early Saturday, leaving behind an impressive 3.1 inches of fluffy white snow in Lexington!

How Much Snow Fell Across the Region?

Snowfall wasn’t limited to just Lexington. Other nearby areas also saw significant accumulations:

  • Lawrenceburg: 2.5 inches
  • Richmond: 3 inches
  • Louisville: 3.2 inches
  • Shepherdsville: 4.5 inches
  • Fort Knox: 4.5 inches
  • Near Leitchfield: a whopping 5.1 inches!

With this latest wave of winter weather, residents in the area are experiencing a taste of what it means to live in the Bluegrass State during winter. On Saturday, temperatures are expected to reach a chilly high of around 30°F, with overnight lows dipping into the upper teens. Make sure you bundle up!

What’s Coming Next?

Looking ahead, Sunday brings a chance for some partly sunny skies and a slight warm-up with highs in the mid-30s. However, don’t let your guard down just yet! From Monday night to Thursday, temperatures are predicted to take a nosedive, dipping into the single digits by Tuesday morning. Folks in Lexington, brace yourselves for temperatures close to 0°F on Wednesday morning, with highs barely scraping the low 20s.

Fortunately, a gradual increase in temperature is anticipated after midweek. By next Friday, we could very well find ourselves back above freezing, possibly hitting a delightful 40°F. Fingers crossed for a warm-up!

Community Preparedness

The recent snowfall and impending Arctic blast follow closely on the heels of a previous winter storm that caused considerable disruptions, including power outages and treacherous road conditions throughout Kentucky. This has prompted local authorities to spring into action. Lexington’s road crews are on the job around the clock, working in alternating 12-hour shifts to ensure that roads are cleared for safe travel.

In light of the snowy conditions, Fayette County Public Schools have wisely canceled all extracurricular activities for the weekend. Additionally, the popular Raven Run Nature Sanctuary, along with scheduled activities like the Owl Prowl, will remain closed until further notice. If you had plans for the “Take a Hike” event at Hisle Farm Park or youth basketball leagues this weekend, you might need to set them aside.

Helpful Resources for Residents

For those in need of some winter assistance, emergency shelters and outreach services are extended to help keep everyone safe during this extreme cold. And if you have any trash to dispose of, you’re in luck! The Free Trash Disposal Day at Bluegrass Regional Transfer Station is still ongoing until noon on Saturday.

Mayor Linda Gorton has ensured that salt barns are full and first responders are ready to tackle any emergencies that might arise. However, residents are advised to avoid parking on snow emergency routes to help facilitate the efficient clearing of snow. Stay vigilant as Kentucky State Police have been busy, responding to numerous accidents, including 23 non-injury collisions and one injury collision on Friday alone.

As the story unfolds, stay warm, stay safe, and remember, winter won’t last forever in Kentucky—spring is just around the corner!
