Briggs Alexander and Lawyers Discuss Lawsuit Against Kentucky and Former Head Coach, Lars Jorgensen
In a revealing press conference held on April 20, 2024, Briggs Alexander, along with her legal team and advocate Rachel Denhollander, detailed the allegations contained in their lawsuit against the University of Kentucky, former head swim coach Lars Jorgensen, athletic director Mitch Barnhart, and coach Gary Conelly.
Uncovering Abuses
Alexander, who filed the lawsuit, revealed during the conference the extensive abuse she endured starting at 17, just two days after graduating from high school. She claimed that the university was aware of complaints about Jorgensen’s misconduct but knowingly hired him, thus perpetuating an unhealthy environment that allowed his behavior to continue for years.
“He was in a position where if I didn’t have him, I had nothing,” Alexander said about the power dynamic with the once-esteemed coach. She further claimed that the university’s inaction left her helpless and forced to endure abuse silently for fear of repercussions.
The Lawsuit’s Impact
Megan Bonanni, one of Alexander’s representing attorneys, expressed that given the severity and timeline of the allegations against Jorgensen, there is strong reason to believe that there are additional victims and witnesses to the alleged misconduct. The lawyers hope the public attention will encourage others to come forward.
Further, Channing Robinson Holmes, another lawyer in Alexander’s team, confirmed that the possibility of more plaintiffs and witnesses stepping forward is anticipated as people reconcile with the shocking revelations.
Failure of Institutional Support
Alexander expressed disappointment in the University’s Title IX office, which she believed was meant to protect athletes. The office failed to respond or take action even after multiple attempts on her part to report the abuse, Alexander claimed.
Seeking Justice
Denhollander reiterated that developing safer athletic environments requires thorough institutional change. She called on the university to evaluate and modify their existing policies, especially around sexual misconduct, in order to ensure better protection for students.
The lawsuit filed by Alexander aims to bring necessary accountability and change these existing policies. It also seeks justice for the victims of misconduct and abuse, particularly within the university’s athletic department.
