Father Jim Sichko Launches Charity Auction of Rare Willett Bourbon Bottles to Support Local Organizations

Lexington, Kentucky – A unique initiative is underway as Father Jim Sichko, a Papal Missionary of Mercy, transforms rare bourbon bottles into a means of aiding those in need. Earlier this year, Sichko presented Pope Francis with bottles from Willett Distillery, sparking a charitable auction intended to benefit various organizations.

The auction, hosted by Sotheby’s New York, features two signed bottles from Willett, expected to generate between $1,000 and $10,000 each. This sale will run from November 20 until December 7, 2024, coinciding with the live auction segment.

Sichko, known for his public speaking and charitable efforts, opted for the Willett bourbon as a distinctive Kentucky representation of Pope Francis’s mission of compassion. He noted that the charitable focus parallels the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi, emphasizing the spirit of giving.

The auction includes a bottle celebrating the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’s election, featuring the Papal Coat of Arms and signature. This bottle contains a 10-year-old Willett bourbon, bottled at 132.6 proof. Another bottle, marking the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year, is also signed and contains bourbon bottled at 144.2 proof.

In addition to the Willett bottles, a bottle endorsed by former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will also be auctioned. Proceeds will be directed to several charities, including Maxwell Street Legal Immigration Clinic in Lexington and Paws 4 the Cause in Lexington, among others.

Sichko expressed both excitement and apprehension when requesting the pope’s signature, noting that such autographed items are a rarity. “The Holy Father doesn’t usually autograph things,” he stated, referencing the considerable value of signed collectibles.

Beyond the auction, additional bottles from the latest Willett barrel pick will be available for purchase at local stores, although these sales will not contribute to the fundraising efforts for the charities. Five bottles will be sold through Ernie’s Spirits and 10 through Jillian’s Bourbon & Bling, with prices set by the retailers.

This charitable endeavor not only highlights the rich bourbon culture of Kentucky but also showcases the potential of spirits to make a meaningful difference in communities. As Sichko articulates, each bottle represents a blend of tradition, craftsmanship, and the spirit of giving that embodies the essence of their purpose.
