LEXINGTON, Ky. — A local educator’s passion for baking has transformed into a new business venture with the opening of BK’s Cookies & More! Leon Buford-Kelly, who has served as the associate principal at Leestown Middle School since 2011, has officially launched his bakery in January 2024.
Buford-Kelly, well-respected in the Fayette County School District, is excited to bring his love for cooking into a storefront. “I just love what I do for the students and the teachers, building the students up to be great people,” he said, highlighting his commitment to education while balancing his new role as a business owner.
The store, located at 365 Longview Plaza, features a variety of baked goods beyond cookies, including brownies, ice cream, cookie brittle, brownie balls, and cookie butter. “It’s not only cookies,” Buford-Kelly clarified, noting the diverse selection available to customers.
Initially gaining popularity for his cookies, Buford-Kelly has seen high demand, particularly for his signature banana pudding ice cream, which has been known to sell out regularly. He previously offered his treats at Total Wine locations in Lexington and Louisville, and has shipped products globally, even to members of the military stationed overseas.
While overseeing the school, Buford-Kelly has successfully managed the new bakery by employing former students he trusts. “These are students that I trust, that work hard,” he said, emphasizing the significance of mentoring the youth he has taught.
Looking ahead, Buford-Kelly has ambitions to expand his business, with hopes of opening additional locations in cities like Louisville and Nashville. He also plans to engage the community by offering cooking classes, stating, “There’s a lot of things going on here at BK’s Cookies & More, so I’m excited for what’s yet to come.”
As both an educator and an entrepreneur, Buford-Kelly remains dedicated to creating smiles through his culinary delights while continuing his educational mission until retirement.
