Georgetown, Ky. — A local man has been charged with attempted kidnapping following allegations that he attempted to lure a 10-year-old girl into his van. Moises Quebrado Vergara was arrested on Monday after investigations revealed he had been following the girl from her school bus stop to her home.
According to court records, the girl reported that Vergara made multiple attempts to entice her into his white van through verbal communications and finger gestures. The unsettling interaction was partially captured on a home security camera in the area, which played a critical role in the investigation.
The footage, obtained by local sources, shows Vergara exiting his van and walking towards the back door while briefly speaking to the girl as she walked by. He then opened the back door of the vehicle, leaned inside, closed it, and subsequently drove away. Shortly after, additional footage depicts the same van returning in the same direction as the girl.
Upon identifying Vergara as the individual from the video, Georgetown Police spoke to him. He acknowledged his presence in the footage but claimed it was all a misunderstanding, according to his arrest citation. Assistant Chief Josh Nash revealed that police are investigating prior reports of similar incidents dating back to 2022, where a man resembling Vergara and driving a similar van had been involved.
Nash emphasized the importance of the home security footage, stating it was vital for identifying the suspect and pursuing charges against him. “I think it was a good civic duty of the neighbor,” Nash noted. “They saw something odd happening and took the initiative to report it.”
This case has led to increased scrutiny of Vergara, whose past behavior is under review by investigators as they seek to determine potential connections to previous incidents. Police have urged the community to remain vigilant, and officers involved in the case have been commended for their prompt and thorough response.
The Georgetown Police Department continues to encourage residents to report any suspicious activity, highlighting that community awareness can be crucial in preventing similar incidents in the future.
