In the bustling city of Lexington, a shocking incident unfolded on August 19 that left the local community talking. Just after 5:30 p.m., a man named Darrell Blankenship was arrested by US Marshals after allegedly assaulting a woman named Kasey Dickens at a stoplight. It was a situation that no one could have seen coming.
According to an arrest warrant, the drama began as Blankenship and Dickens were both waiting in traffic on South Limestone at Virginia Avenue. Dickens had her car window rolled down when Blankenship approached her from behind. Reports indicate that he grabbed her shoulder and started shouting some harsh words—profane language that surely startled Dickens. As she turned to look at him, things took a turn for the worse.
Blankenship allegedly struck Dickens twice in the face with a closed fist, leading to several serious injuries. The warrant describes her suffering from a fractured nose, swelling around her left eye, and bleeding from her nose along with general pain in that area. That’s not something you expect while stuck in traffic!
Things escalated from there. As Dickens made sense of what had just happened, her boyfriend, Jonah Gentry, unknowingly drove up next to Blankenship’s vehicle. He confronted Blankenship about the situation, clearly unaware of Dickens’ injuries at that moment.
During this encounter, Blankenship reportedly threatened Gentry, saying he had “something for him” while pointing to two large dogs inside his vehicle. Talk about adding fuel to the fire! Gentry was understandably worried, and the image of potentially being attacked by dogs or facing a weapon crossed his mind.
After moving their vehicles further down the street, Gentry eventually discovered the extent of Dickens’ injuries. That’s when they decided to call the police. When officers arrived, Gentry and Dickens provided a detailed description of Blankenship and his vehicle, which was crucial for the investigation.
Using camera footage and the Flock License Plate Recognition system, law enforcement was able to track down Blankenship’s vehicle. Several interviews with family members helped police identify Blankenship as the primary suspect. Thanks to the hard work of the authorities, Blankenship was taken into custody and is now facing serious charges, including second-degree assault and menacing.
Following the assault, Dickens sought medical attention for her injuries, which provided crucial care as she began her recovery. We had a chance to talk with Dickens’ sister, Davis Dickens, who shared how challenging but hopeful the situation has been for the family. It’s never easy seeing a loved one go through something so traumatic.
As Blankenship spends time at the Fayette County Detention Center, the incident serves as an alarming reminder about the unpredictable nature of our daily lives. Traffic stops and everyday moments should never escalate to violence, and it’s heartening to see the community come together after such an event. Let’s keep supporting victims and promoting peace on our roads! Together, we can make a safer environment for everyone.
