Scott County’s AMEN House Expands Weekend Backpack Program for Food-Insecure Students
Georgetown, Ky. — In a commitment to support local students facing food insecurity, AMEN House has successfully initiated its weekend backpack program for the third consecutive year. This initiative is designed to provide meals to children in need during weekends, a time when access to nutritious food can be challenging for many families.
This week, a dedicated team of volunteers is packing more than 350 bags, each containing six meals intended for students over the weekend. A specific order of 85 bags is being prepared as part of the ongoing effort to combat food insecurity in the community.
Michele Carlisle, the executive director of AMEN House, highlights the growing need faced by families: “Feeding America reports that half of all food-insecure families live above government assistance. There’s a unique urgency when you consider that a child is experiencing food insecurities. Being able to provide them with the nutrition they need to navigate the weekends is incredibly significant.”
The financial backing for this program has been robust, with $70,000 raised to support the eight Scott County Schools that receive AMEN House’s prepared bags. According to Scott County Middle School’s youth service coordinator, Olivia Gillis, the demand for assistance is increasing. “I’ve never seen it like this before. Even people who have never reached out for help are struggling this year. Everything is just so expensive,” she reports.
Statistical data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that food prices have been fluctuating since 2020, with a slight decline observed as of September 2024. Gillis reflects on an encounter with a student excited to find his favorite meal in one of the bags. “A kid asked me, ‘Is there spaghetti in those bags?’ When I confirmed, he exclaimed with joy, ‘Yes! I really wanted spaghetti!’ It highlighted a reality that we often overlook.”
Through this program, AMEN House not only provides meals but also promotes educational growth and social well-being among students. Gillis has observed a notable improvement in children’s confidence and overall well-being as they benefit from the meals provided. “Seeing these kids thrive and being a small part of their journey is immensely rewarding,” she stated.

With community support and dedicated volunteers, AMEN House continues to play a vital role in addressing food insecurity in Scott County.
