Lexington Welcomes Injured Palestinian Teen for Medical Treatment
Lexington, Ky. – Concern continues to grow over the devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly for families and innocent civilians caught amidst the conflict. Amidst these troubling circumstances, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund is making significant strides to assist those in need, including the arrival of a 13-year-old boy, Mustafa, who recently escaped the dangers of war.
Mustafa, along with his mother, was evacuated as part of a group of nine children injured during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. He will receive medical treatment at Shriners Hospital, where he hopes to regain a sense of normalcy and care. Mustafa tragically lost his leg due to a bombing several months ago, highlighting the severe ramifications of the war he endured.
The group of injured children includes eight in total, all brought to the United States for care as part of the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund’s initiative. This marks a pivotal moment, as it is the first time the organization has facilitated treatment for a child in Lexington.
Upon their arrival at Bluegrass Airport on Monday night, Mustafa was greeted warmly by community supporters. His host mother, Suemia Elharezi, expressed mixed emotions: “I’m happy he’s here, but I’m also sad for all the other kids that didn’t have the opportunity to leave,” she said. Elharezi continued to reflect on the difficult reality of Mustafa leaving his siblings behind, stating, “It’s hard, especially since it’s still going on. Nothing has changed.”
The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund’s Treatment Abroad Program has enabled Mustafa’s evacuation, along with several other children, thus rendering critical assistance to victims in a time of dire need. With December alone accounting for eight evacuated children receiving medical care, the efforts of the organization remain crucial as they strive to provide healthcare to those affected by the conflict.
As the war persists, the focus remains on improving the circumstances for those who have borne the brunt of this crisis. Mustafa’s story is a reminder of the urgent need for compassion and support for innocent lives affected by ongoing violence.
