NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — A unique cultural event is taking place in Jessamine County as a local group revives the nostalgia of the 1940s with their KCAL Old Time Radio Show. Celebrating a decade of performances, the group consists of nearly a dozen dedicated professionals who aim to recreate the atmosphere of a vintage radio studio. “It started out as just a way to get out and perform, and I think that’s for all of us,” says Doug Fain, an integral member of the ensemble.
The Old Time Radio Show not only provides entertainment but also serves a community purpose. Every December, the group hosts a free gospel performance, utilizing the occasion to raise funds for local homeless children. Co-organizer Denise Cline emphasizes the significance of this mission: “As much fun as it is to put on these shows, I think we’re more proud to be able to help those kids that really need help.”
Performers present a mix of comedy, drama, and suspense, allowing the audience to experience a slice of the golden age of radio entertainment. “We don’t just get out there and per se act. We get out there and have a good time. I hope that shows to the people out in the audience that we really love what we’re doing,” Denise Cline adds.
Doug Fain expresses his passion for this form of entertainment, stating, “I was born way too late. Should have been born back in those days. I enjoy the old time radio.” The performances are designed not just to entertain but also to uplift the spirits of the audience, allowing them to momentarily forget about their day-to-day worries.
