LEXINGTON, Ky. – A community engagement initiative took place on Wednesday night in the E Fifth Street neighborhood, focusing on connecting residents with essential resources. Organized by One Lexington, the event aims to provide support through various services, including mentoring, mental health support, job opportunities, and food assistance.
Executive Director Devine Carama emphasized the importance of community during this difficult time. The neighborhood is currently mourning the loss of 24-year-old Dion Jermaine Higgins, who was tragically shot and killed on Saturday night. “We are not checking on our neighbors, being there for one another. That is what today is about. Anything moving forward will be more of a coordinated response, but today is about love,” Carama stated.
The initiative involved volunteers and community partners going door to door, engaging with residents through conversation, prayer, and support. “Today was a perfect example of what community engagement is supposed to be. You see a need, you see a hurt in the community, you lean in and you just put people first,” said volunteer Tianna T. Miller.
During the walk, the team distributed donated produce from Black Soil and provided flyers with information on available community resources. These resources include free English classes, second chance hiring opportunities through companies like UPS and Jubilee Jobs, as well as scholarships for skills and trade certification through One Lexington.
Valencia Davis, a local resident, shared her sentiments, saying, “My heart goes out to all these parents who lost loved ones. I never lost a son, and I thank God. I was coming close to losing my child. We just need to come closer together.”
One Lexington is also addressing the impact of gun violence on the youth. They are offering to cover the costs of skills or trade certification for those aged 18-24 who have been affected by shootings. This initiative exemplifies the organization’s commitment to rebuilding and supporting the community in the wake of tragedy.
As the E Fifth Street neighborhood begins the healing process, initiatives like these highlight the vital role of community engagement in overcoming adversity and fostering resilience among residents.
