Frankfort’s Franklin County Humane Society Thrives in New Facility

Frankfort, Kentucky – The Franklin County Humane Society, which relocated to a new facility in the late spring of 2023, has found stability and growth after years of grappling with flooding issues at its former site.

The organization moved to a custom-built, $6.5 million facility located at 100 Companion Place, just off the East-West Connector, following a multi-year fundraising campaign. This strategic move has not only provided the humane society with a larger space to accommodate animals in need, but it has also safeguarded its operations from the frequent flooding of the Kentucky River.

Before the relocation, the humane society experienced repeated disruptions due to rising floodwaters. Notably, the Kentucky River crested at 40.16 feet on March 5, 2021, causing serious challenges for the organization. The new facility, designed with the community’s needs in mind, allows the humane society to focus on its mission without the threat of imminent flooding.

The new location features improved facilities aimed at enhancing animal care and adoption processes. Since the move, staff have reported a rise in community engagement and a significant increase in the number of animals successfully placed in loving homes.

This transition signifies a new chapter for the Franklin County Humane Society as they continue to expand their services and strengthen community ties. Their commitment to providing for stray and abandoned animals remains unwavering, supported now by a solid infrastructure to withstand environmental challenges.

As the humane society sets its sights on future initiatives, it will continue prioritizing animal welfare and educational outreach to encourage responsible pet ownership in the community.

With favorable weather conditions in the forecast — including plenty of sunshine and highs reaching up to 74°F — the society is optimistic about the opportunities ahead, planning various community engagement events.

Moving forward, the Franklin County Humane Society is poised to make a lasting impact, backed by a resilient facility and a dedicated team ready to face both challenges and triumphs in animal rescue and care.
