Fatherhood Summit in Kentucky Empowers Dads with Workshops and Resources for Family Connection

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A three-day fatherhood summit, organized by the Commonwealth Center for Fathers and Families, concluded this weekend, drawing 350 first-time and seasoned dads to participate in workshops, panels, and networking opportunities. This event, held annually, aims to empower fathers and provide essential resources for family connection.

William Oliver, a participant from the Kentucky Dad Academy graduating class of 2024, expressed how the summit helped him address personal challenges in fatherhood. He stated, “They helped me realize a lot of the inequities that I was going through. I was stuck as a parent.” His journey towards improvement began after he faced adversity following the loss of a job. “The program helped provide us with the resources and the confidence to reach out and say, I’m not where I want to be and I need help getting to where I need to go,” he added.

The summit featured an exclusive panel discussion, a variety of workshops, and a luncheon, all designed to enhance dads’ skills and foster a sense of community. Chief Visionary Officer David Cozart, who founded the center nearly 11 years ago, emphasized the broad implications of fatherhood on various social issues, including education, health, sobriety, and reentry. He noted, “Father absence and father inclusion is a part of all of those things.”

The Commonwealth Center provides numerous resources, including training courses for future leaders and mini-grants aimed at supporting father-figure programs across Kentucky. These initiatives, which have been ongoing for six years, are designed to address the unique challenges faced by fathers and promote a culture of inclusivity.

Oliver articulated the importance of understanding one’s values and interests to effectively connect with children. “Learn the important things about your children so that you can connect with them,” he said. His commitment extends beyond personal growth; he aims to assist other fathers in navigating their journeys.

In conclusion, the Commonwealth Center for Fathers and Families continues to play a vital role in empowering fathers in Kentucky. The organization’s efforts not only provide support but also foster a community committed to promoting healthy family dynamics.
