Governor Beshear Launches Council to Enhance Employment Opportunities for Former Inmates in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Andy Beshear has announced the formation of the Governor’s Council of Second Chance Employers, an initiative designed to enhance employment opportunities for former inmates in Kentucky. The executive order establishing the council was signed recently as part of ongoing efforts to support reintegration and reduce recidivism among individuals released from incarceration.

The council is aimed at promoting second-chance hiring across various industries, providing individuals with the necessary skills and job placements to reintegrate into society. Governor Beshear emphasized the importance of these opportunities, stating, “…how we get folks reentering our society to have the skills, but then ultimately that job, is probably the biggest determining factor of whether they are going to make it, get back with their families, repair their lives, or whether they might reoffend.”

This initiative comes in response to the growing need for comprehensive reentry services in Kentucky, aligning with the state’s strategic goals to both reduce crime rates and bolster the workforce. By providing support and job placement resources, the council aims to create a more inclusive job market while addressing the challenges faced by those with criminal records.

Governor Beshear’s launch of the council demonstrates a commitment to a progressive approach in addressing societal issues linked to incarceration and recidivism. The effort is expected to not only improve the lives of former inmates but also contribute positively to Kentucky’s overall economic landscape.

As the initiative progresses, stakeholders from various sectors will be encouraged to participate and collaborate, with the objective of fostering an environment where second-chance employment can thrive. This represents a significant step forward in breaking the cycle of reoffending and encouraging successful transitions into the community.

The Governor’s Council of Second Chance Employers is poised to make a tangible impact in the lives of many Kentuckians, underscoring the principle that everyone deserves a chance to succeed.
