Lexington, Ky. — Lighthouse Ministries, a vital support system for the community, is celebrating two decades of service and has recently received significant financial assistance to enhance its operations. Volunteer Frank Abbott reflects on the organization’s journey, stating, “From being just the ordinary feeding place to a full-time ministry, not only to feed people but to minister to them.”
Since its inception, Lighthouse Ministries has provided meals to those in need on a near-daily basis. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like God’s Pantry food bank, the ministry collects, stores, and prepares food for individuals and families facing hunger. Abbott noted that many patrons rely on the facility for meals on six or seven days a week.
This year, Lighthouse Ministries garnered a considerable boost in funding, having received a $20,000 grant from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, alongside an additional $10,000 from the KFC Foundation’s Kentucky Fried Wishes program. These funds will be allocated towards replacing an essential industrial refrigerator.
Emma Horn, Executive Director of the KFC Foundation, highlighted the importance of these grants, stating, “We do have organizations that apply without a restaurant connection, but we look for those restaurant connections.” She praised Lighthouse Ministries for embodying that spirit of community connection, referencing the historical significance of the Colonel Sanders legacy.
Tay Henderson, the founder of Lighthouse Ministries, expressed her gratitude for the support, emphasizing that “we’re feeding people that would go hungry.” She explained that the funding is crucial to ensure their services can continue uninterrupted, as equipment failure could leave clients without meals for extended periods.
During a recent celebration, Henderson shared the organization’s humble beginnings, underscoring the importance of community involvement. “When you know where you came from, you know where you’re going. And people want to help,” she said. Her philosophy, “People follow motion,” reflects the belief that even small gestures of kindness can inspire broader community engagement.
The continued support of local organizations and foundations positions Lighthouse Ministries as a cornerstone for recovery and redemption in Lexington. The additional funding marks a significant milestone in their mission to serve those in need, ensuring that no one goes hungry in the community.
