Record Enrollment at University of Kentucky and Asbury University

Lexington, Kentucky – In an encouraging sign for higher education, both the University of Kentucky and Asbury University have reported record enrollment figures for the current academic year. The surge signifies a strong recovery following challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The University of Kentucky now serves approximately 36,000 students, marking its highest enrollment rate ever, which includes first-time freshmen and transfer students. Dr. Kirsten Turner, the university’s Vice President for Student Success, expressed optimism about the growth, stating, “There’s a lot of excitement, particularly when you think about coming out of COVID and all that this generation of students went through to be on campus.”

In response to the increased enrollment, UK is enhancing its infrastructure. It is currently renovating its White Hall classroom building, which is the largest classroom facility on campus, and plans to open a new residence hall soon. Dr. Turner emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring a positive experience for its growing student body.

Meanwhile, Asbury University, located in Wilmore, is also celebrating its highest-ever total enrollment. Abby Laub, a spokesperson for the university, detailed their student demographics, highlighting growth in traditional undergraduate programs, online offerings, graduate programs, and dual enrollment opportunities for high school students.

Laub acknowledged the challenge of effectively utilizing campus space amidst the enrollment boom. “There were some buildings around that we were able to switch to student housing, but that will be something in the future that we’ll have to look at. It’s a good problem to have!” she said.

Both universities attribute their enrollment success to strong community ties and faculty engagement. “Everyone really cares. Our faculty care about our students; our staff care about our students,” noted Dr. Turner. Laub echoed this sentiment, reporting that Asbury students often express a sense of belonging on campus.

Both institutions closely monitor freshman surveys, which indicate a high response rate. UK students frequently cite the accessibility of higher education within a familiar campus environment, while Asbury students appreciate the personal connections with staff that contribute to their stay at the university.

As both the University of Kentucky and Asbury University navigate this period of growth, the emphasis remains on fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, ensuring that they feel welcome as they embark on their educational journeys.
