Eastern Kentucky University Partners with Allegiant Air to Fast-Track Aviation Students into Airline Industry

Aviation Career Pathway

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) has launched a new partnership with Allegiant Air, introducing an innovative pilot pathway program aimed at fast-tracking aviation students into the airline industry. The program, known as Allegiant Air’s Accelerate Pilot Pathway, is designed for EKU aviation students entering their senior year, providing them with an exclusive opportunity for employment as cadets and conditional job offers as Allegiant First Officers.

The initiative comes at a crucial time for the airline industry, as the Air Line Pilots Association estimates that around 4,000 pilots will leave the workforce next year due to retirement. This trend has emphasized the need for efficient training pathways to ensure a continuous supply of qualified pilots.

According to Allegiant Air Pilot Pathway Manager Robert Butler, the program allows recent graduates to bypass the regional airline sector, placing them directly into larger aircraft operations. “Through that mentorship and constant touch points, we decided we can take pilots straight out of school with a thousand hours and put them in an Airbus or Boeing straight to a major airline,” Butler stated. He added that the program has already seen considerable success, with 40 students having completed the pathway so far.

Current EKU aviation students have expressed enthusiasm about the fast-track opportunity, a sentiment echoed by the institution’s recent enrollment surge, which has seen a remarkable 140% increase in the last three years. Notably, students highlight that more women are entering the aviation field, fostering greater diversity in the profession.

This partnership not only enhances the learning experience for EKU students but also responds to the growing need for skilled pilots in the aviation sector. By creating a streamlined pipeline to major airlines, EKU and Allegiant Air are contributing to the sustainability of the airline industry while simultaneously supporting the career aspirations of aspiring aviators.
