Lexington, KY, Community Comes Together After Storm-Induced Power Outages
Lexington, Kentucky is witnessing a concerted effort to support families affected by the recent storm that left thousands without power. Local organization Black Soil KY has stepped in to alleviate the immediate food crisis by distributing fresh produce to those in need.
In the aftermath of the storm, many families reported losing significant amounts of food due to prolonged power outages. According to Amber Fuller, director of marketing and special projects for Black Soil KY, some households lost over $500 worth of perishable items, including everything in their fridges and freezers. “We had several people come up to us and say that they lost everything,” Fuller stated.
Within a span of just two days, nearly 250 bags filled with fresh produce—including squash, onions, and apples—were prepared and distributed to families in Lexington. These items were sourced from Black and Indigenous farmers, showcasing local agricultural resilience. An additional 400 bags were allocated to the Georgetown Street Neighborhood Association and residents in eastern Kentucky.
The distribution was notably effective, bolstered by the power of social media. “We didn’t even pick it out to our community partners; we just let the power of the internet do its thing,” Fuller remarked, highlighting the growing community connection. The organization recognizes that food accessibility is a significant issue for many households, particularly after the recent storm disruptions.
Fuller emphasized the importance of supporting diverse communities in Lexington, stating, “The people that we’re going to be able to help, it’s all walks of life.” This distribution initiative is part of a larger strategy to foster community connections and support in the region.
Looking ahead, Black Soil KY plans to continue utilizing its new distribution facility located at 820 Lane Allen Road. This space will serve as a hub for weekly produce distributions and will eventually include a fresh produce market, an area dedicated to staff and volunteers, and a loading dock designed for farmers.
The swift response by local organizations and the community underscores the resilience and mutual support present in Lexington during challenging times. As residents work to recover from the storm’s aftermath, initiatives like those offered by Black Soil KY play a crucial role in rebuilding stability and health for affected families.
