This surge in deer activity corresponds with the onset of mating season, which typically spans the fall months and increases deer crossings on roadways across the area.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports approximately 1.5 million deer-related vehicle accidents occur annually in the United States, with a noticeable uptick expected in Central Kentucky. According to Lori Weaver Hawkins, a representative from AAA Bluegrass, “We’re blessed in Lexington and the surrounding area; we have a lot of green space which also means ample deer habitat.”
With the timing coinciding with peak commuting hours, this increase in deer movement poses a significant risk to drivers. Data from AAA indicates that the average insurance claim for collisions involving animals surpassed $5,000 last year, reflecting both the dangerous nature of these incidents and their financial repercussions.
Experts recommend several precautionary measures for motorists to minimize risks. They advise that drivers remain particularly alert during early morning and evening hours, when deer tend to be most active. Utilizing high beams during nighttime driving can improve visibility, provided there is no incoming traffic.
If a deer is spotted on the road, experts suggest honking the car horn to alert the animal. In situations where a collision appears unavoidable, it is safer to brake rather than attempt to swerve to avoid the deer. “Keep in mind that deer seldom travel by themselves; they’re usually in groups,” Hawkins cautioned, stressing that seeing one deer could indicate more are nearby.
