Talon Winery Celebrates 25 Years of Family Legacy and Agri-Tourism in Lexington, Kentucky

Family vineyard celebration

Lexington, Kentucky — Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Talon Winery has established itself as a family-run vineyard that accurately reflects the spirit of its founders. Established in 1999 by Harriet Allen and her late husband, the winery is situated on 300 acres of scenic farmland along Tates Creek Road, just outside of Lexington’s city limits.

Today, Talon Winery is managed by four generations of the Allen family, offering not only a variety of Kentucky wines but also a picturesque destination for both locals and visitors seeking to enjoy the beautiful Bluegrass landscape. The winery has evolved from its original name, Fair View Farm, to become known for its Homestead Tasting Room, which occupies a farmhouse built in 1790. This historic building has been restored while still showcasing its original architectural features.

Harriet Allen’s vision, along with her family’s dedication, has transformed the winery from a simple agricultural venture into a thriving business. “When they purchased the place, they aimed to create an agri-tourism experience,” explained Lauren Rutherford, Allen’s granddaughter and the winery’s marketing director. “At the time, we learned that red wine was good for the heart, sparking the idea to grow grapes for wine production.”

Over the years, the winery has expanded steadily, including a branch opened in Shelby County in 2009. The family-oriented operations feature various roles, with Allen’s aunt overseeing human resources and other family members assisting in daily operations, such as managing tastings and planning events.

Talon Winery offers a diverse selection of nearly two dozen wines, from dry Chardonnays to sweet blackberry Moscatos. In addition to wine tastings, the venue is popular for hosting weddings, corporate events, and private tours. Live music can be enjoyed on Saturdays, with additional performances during the summer and select Sundays.

As part of the ongoing anniversary festivities, the winery has organized various events throughout the year, including special offerings for loyal wine club members. “We’ve had members since the beginning, and we want to show our appreciation with extras and giveaways throughout the year,” Rutherford stated.

Looking ahead, the Allen family remains committed to continuing the winery’s legacy. “Our goal is to keep providing a welcoming space for visitors,” Rutherford emphasized. “We’re not a snooty place; we want everyone to feel comfortable coming to enjoy a casual gathering over wine.” Talon Winery looks forward to another 25 years of growth and celebration within the Kentucky wine community.
