Lexington Celebrates Isabel Yates’ 100th Birthday
LEXINGTON, KY – On the evening of September 30, as Hurricane Helene dissipated over the region, the spotlight shifted to another remarkable milestone. Isabel Yates, former Vice-Mayor of Lexington, celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends.
Yates, whose official birthday is on October 1, shares this centennial celebration with former President Jimmy Carter. To further honor her legacy, October has been designated Isabel Yates Month, as announced in a proclamation by Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, effective from October 10.
Born in South Carolina, Yates relocated to Lexington in the 1960s with her husband, Wilson, and their four children. Guided by her father’s motto, “You better be proud of the place where you live, and you should live so the place is proud of you,” Yates became deeply involved in public service throughout her life.
Her civic contributions are vast and varied, including notable projects like the transformation of a derelict industrial area into McConnell Springs. Yates has volunteered for numerous organizations, including the Arts and Heritage Festival, the Kentucky Mother’s Association, and the United Way. Her attention to stormwater management earned her the moniker “the Stormwater Queen,” a testament to her dedication to local environmental issues.
From 1991 to 2002, Yates served on Lexington’s Urban County Council, during which time she became the city’s first female vice-mayor. Former Mayor Jim Gray praised her, calling her “a force of nature” and noting her unwavering commitment to the community.
Her son, Glenn Yates, emphasized her strength in her genuine concern for others and her passion for improving Lexington. “She loves Lexington and the State of Kentucky,” he said, adding that she values the achievements made through collaboration.
