Lexington, Kentucky – The University of Kentucky School of Journalism and Media hosted its annual Scripps Howard State of the First Amendment Address on September 26, 2023. The event took place at the J. David Rosenberg College of Law, featuring notable speaker Michael Abate, a professional litigator.
Abate delivered a compelling address emphasizing the significance of the First Amendment in court decisions and its role in fostering a free press. With a distinguished background, including a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a juris doctor from Stanford Law School, he articulated the necessity for courts to uphold and interpret the law effectively.
During his address, Abate highlighted important judicial rulings, including Snyder v. Phelps (2011) and McCullen v. Coakley (2014). He explained that these cases underscore the protections granted to free speech, particularly in challenging contexts. “The First Amendment is the cornerstone of the marketplace of ideas… and the backbone of free press,” Abate stated. He further stressed the responsibility of the judicial system to comprehend the implications of free speech rights.
Following his speech, the prestigious James Madison Award was presented to Scott Horn, the 2024 recipient. This award recognizes individuals in Kentucky whose work significantly contributes to the preservation of freedom of the press and speech, a legacy initiated in 2006.
Among those in attendance was Deborah Chung, Associate Dean of Success, who expressed the importance of the address for journalism professionals. “I want to support our colleagues…this (the address) is a place where you could learn about some very powerful information about the First Amendment,” Chung noted.
Attendees also included students, such as junior print journalism major Jemi Chew, who valued the event’s celebration of free speech efforts in Kentucky. “I feel like this award is very important just because it really celebrates Kentucky… the people in Kentucky who are working to expand the First Amendment and help the public,” Chew remarked.
