LEXINGTON, KY – Opa Owiye Johnson has been appointed as the new executive director of Women Leading Kentucky, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing women’s leadership across the state. Johnson, who accepted the position on September 27, 2024, brings extensive experience from the nonprofit sector, particularly her previous role as chief of staff at GirlTrek, which focuses on improving health outcomes for Black women and girls.

Women Leading Kentucky, founded 25 years ago, aims to empower women to become leaders in their personal and professional lives. The organization has created a statewide network of business professionals offering mentorship and support at various career stages.

Since relocating to Lexington five years ago, Johnson has embraced her community and formed lasting connections. She expressed enthusiasm for her new role, emphasizing its potential to impact women and communities positively. “Women can be leaders wherever they are in life,” she stated, underscoring the organization’s mission.

Networking plays a crucial role for women in advancing their careers. According to a 2023 report by Chief, 94% of senior executive women credited their networks with career support. Johnson highlighted how building connections facilitates mentorship opportunities and can lead to senior-level positions and higher salaries.

Reflecting on her career, Johnson shared that her 20-year involvement with the Junior League significantly helped her. “I know the power women hold when they come together to support and lift one another,” she noted.

Civic engagement is another key area where Johnson believes women can make strides in their careers. It not only enhances community understanding but also generates opportunities for developing leadership skills. Volunteering has historically allowed her to gain necessary experiences when transitioning in her career.

For women seeking career advancement, Johnson advises proactive outreach. She encourages connecting with professionals in desired positions by introducing oneself and seeking guidance. “We shouldn’t keep our dreams a secret,” she remarked, stressing the importance of relationship-building.

Johnson also addressed personal challenges, overcoming her introverted nature to take on prominent roles in her career. A pivotal moment occurred early in her fundraising career when she was urged to step out of the background and engage with others. “Women need to be willing to speak up and claim their space,” she stated, promoting a powerful message of assertiveness and visibility.

Under Johnson’s leadership, Women Leading Kentucky is poised for continued success in advancing women’s leadership in the community, emphasizing the significance of network-building, civic engagement, and self-advocacy.
