LEXINGTON, Ky. — A significant event unfolded at Breckinridge Elementary School as the University of Kentucky dental program’s mobile unit collaborated with HealthFirst Lex to provide on-site dental care for students. This initiative signifies a new approach in which children can receive essential dental services without leaving school grounds.

The mobile clinic began operations in the morning, marking Breckinridge as the first school to benefit from this program. According to Dr. Ron Singer, a faculty member involved in the initiative, “We’ve already seen six children for comprehensive health exams and necessary dental x-rays to identify dental decay.” This service aims to not only provide immediate dental assistance but also to alleviate the anxiety that children may feel about dental visits.

Roxanne Campbell from HealthFirst Lex remarked, “They’re a little nervous at first, but once everyone’s on here and talking to them, they get excited.” The presence of dental residents and attending dentists further enhances the comfort level for students. Fun elements like stickers and goody bags help to create a positive atmosphere around dental health.

This program also streamlines the process for families, as parents no longer need to take time off work to escort their children to dental appointments. “It just really makes it convenient for the families,” Campbell added, highlighting the dual benefit for students and their parents.

Furthermore, the initiative is mutually beneficial for dental students at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Singer emphasized that the program aligns with the educational goals of the UK College of Dentistry, stating, “They’re excited to provide the dental care. This is what they live for.” The mobile clinic is not only treating children but is also a practical training ground for future dentists.

The mobile clinic will continue its mission by visiting William Wells Brown Elementary following the fall break, indicating the potential for expanded access to dental care for more students in the area.
