LEXINGTON, Ky. — The remnants of Tropical Storm Helene impacted the area on Thursday, causing strong winds and heavy rain that resulted in power outages, fallen trees, and structural damage.

Around the city, residents faced hazardous conditions as gusty winds uprooted trees and debris obstructed roads. Kam Kraus described the weather as notably severe, stating, “It’s definitely raining sideways, but there were a bunch of trees down by my way, and I thought that was a little scary driving by.” Reports indicated that road closures were likely due to the downed trees.

Emergency responders were dispatched to a structure fire on Starling Drive early Thursday morning, further straining local resources. As winds intensified, residents on Sherwood Drive experienced additional challenges. Mark Ryles, a long-time resident, faced a direct impact when a tree fell on his home, causing significant damage. Ryles recounted the harrowing moment, stating, “I first ran to the side window because you could hear the side window and you could hear the sound.”

Power outages were widespread. Ryles noted, “The power is out and it’s probably been out since about 11 o’clock.” The fallen tree also damaged Ryles’ vehicle, smashing through the glass of his Mini Cooper. “I didn’t realize that this tree had fallen and actually hit the magnolia,” he explained, illustrating the chaos of the event.

Community support was evident as well, with neighbors helping each other during the storm’s aftermath. Ryles described meeting a stranger who came to assist him in moving his damaged car, stating, “It was blowing hard and raining hard when he comes to help me, so I can’t say enough about that.” This spontaneous act of kindness allowed Ryles to get his vehicle to a body shop as he navigated the continuing hazards from the storm.

Despite the ongoing emergency, city crews have been busy rerouting traffic in areas affected by fallen trees and debris, working diligently to ensure public safety.

As the storm rolls through, residents are urged to stay cautious and remain informed about local developments as recovery efforts and cleanup operations unfold.
