Lexington Eagerly Prepares for Football Season

This week, Lexington is buzzing with excitement as students flock back to the University of Kentucky and the football team gears up for their opening game. With the exhilarating atmosphere comes an even busier time for local restaurants, especially those situated close to campus. The upcoming season is not just about touchdowns and tailgates; it’s a major opportunity for eateries to showcase their culinary delights and hospitality.

One such hotspot is The Local Taco, located right across from UK’s campus on South Limestone. Owner Kevin Lewis is gearing up for a monumental week, planning to whip up a staggering 25,000 tacos. “I mean we just try to do the best that we can do,” Lewis said. “We try to use the best ingredients that we can find. We do everything from scratch every day.” It’s not just about quantity; it’s about quality. One notable ingredient highlights this commitment: tomatoes. Lewis proudly shared that he grew 600 pounds of juicy tomatoes this year from his garden to supply his two restaurants. “That’s only about 100 pounds a day we can burn through in three days,” he remarked.

But it’s not all about the food at The Local Taco. The restaurant thrives on community. Lewis notes the value of building a nurturing culture, especially among college students who may be starting their first or second job. “It’s pretty awesome to help them learn how to work with somebody else when they graduate,” he stated.

Another crowd favorite, Indie’s Chicken, is also bracing for the football frenzy. Located on North Broadway, this eatery has been serving tantalizing meals to students and fans for decades. According to Director of Operations Alex Evanczyk, football game days are a sensory overload of food and fun. “It’s pretty much all day,” he explained. “People have parties starting early, and they go till late. We provide things to eat before the game, during the game, and after the game.” This weekend alone, they are gearing up to serve between 15,000 and 20,000 chicken wings! The mouthwatering aroma and vibrant atmosphere at Indie’s are simply irresistible.

Indie’s Chicken is known for their southern-style home cooking and warm hospitality. “We have one of the best, I call it families, in the restaurant business that we could ask for,” Evanczyk added. This sense of belonging and teamwork is palpable as you witness the restaurant staff working together like a well-oiled machine, ensuring that every wing meets their high standards for quality.

But it’s not just tacos and wings that take center stage. Lexington has a treasure trove of eateries ready to serve up diverse, delicious options to fans and students alike. From pizzas to pretzels, and everything in between, the choices are nearly limitless. This versatility allows restaurants to cater to the differing tastes of football fans and college students, making it a delightful food adventure every week.

As the game days approach, local restaurants can expect foot traffic from a mix of enthusiastic students, families, and loyal fans. The streets will be lined with people looking for a fun place to grab a bite before heading into the stadium. The tailgate parties will be bustling and lively, filled with laughter, excitement, and, of course, great food. It’s a tradition that encapsulates the spirit of Lexington — a place where community, celebration, and cuisine collide.

In preparation for the season ahead, many restaurants are staying late to ensure everything’s perfect — from polishing their menus to adjusting their staffing needs. Some are even hosting special events to draw in new customers and keep the regulars coming back for more. But the heart of it all remains the same— providing a memorable dining experience for their loyal patrons.

In conclusion, as Lexington kicks off the much-anticipated football season, it’s clear that local restaurants are ready to rise to the occasion. With preparation, passion, and a commitment to quality food and service, they are here to make game days not just about football, but about the delightful culinary journey that comes before, during, and after the matches. This bustling city is poised to create memories that will linger long after the final whistle blows. So whether you’re craving a tasty taco or succulent chicken wings, Lexington has got it all lined up to make this football season unforgettable!
