Karen Perry, Ed.D., Named Executive Director of The Center for Next Generation Leadership
LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 15, 2024) — Today marks the advent of a new era for the Center for Next Generation Leadership at the University of Kentucky College of Education as seasoned educator Dr. Karen Perry steps into the seat of Executive Director. The center serves as a statewide network aimed at advancing learning and teaching experiences within schools and districts across the Commonwealth, based on a student-centered national movement.
Exceptional Leadership Skills
“Dr. Perry’s exceptional leadership skills, extensive experience and dedication to advancing education make her the ideal candidate for this role,” professed Danelle Stevens-Watkins, Ph.D., the College of Education’s acting dean. Perry’s track record is indeed commendable having been the associate director of the center since 2019. She played a key role in developing a teacher rank-change model in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Education.
Previous Experiences
Her experiences highlight her deep understanding of the education landscape, which includes serving as director of personalized learning in Henry County Schools in Georgia and a career kick start as a high school social studies teacher.

Previous Executive Director Dr. Lu Young who is continuing to lead the Next Gen’s Leadership Academy, passes the baton with confidence and trust to Perry, believing Next Gen will undoubtedly thrive under her leadership.
Word from the Committee
Superintendent of Allen County Schools and member of the executive director search committee, Travis Hamby, voiced his endorsement of Perry’s appointment. Michelle Hunt, chief academic officer of Fleming County Schools, also echoed Hamby’s sentiments.

The center has been key to innovating practices, building alternative models to traditional school and most importantly, developing a generation of leaders across Kentucky. Justin Bathon, Ph.D., J.D., professor and faculty director of the Center for Next Generation Leadership, marks Perry’s appointment as a continuation of a long tradition of practitioner-scholars striving to bridge the distance between schools and the state’s flagship university.
