LEXINGTON, Ky. – Largest One-Day Food Drive in U.S.

The City of Lexington buzzed with activity as the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive was held on Saturday. Often recognized as the largest single-day food drive in the U.S., the event gathers a mammoth amount of food items to fend off the persistent issue of food scarcity for thousands of families across Kentucky.

National Association of Letter Carriers Takes the Initiative

The noteworthy initiative is hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers each year. The concept of the drive is simple yet effective – residents are encouraged to leave food items next to their mailboxes. These are then collected by the letter carriers during their usual mail delivery rounds. The collected food is then delivered to local post offices, where volunteers come forward to sort through it.

“We get a ton of food, and it helps thousands of families in Kentucky fight food insecurity,” said Hanna Martin, the volunteer and food drive coordinator for God’s Pantry Food Bank. “It supports our pantries here.”

God’s Pantry Food Bank – Proud Participant of the Drive

A standout participant in this year’s drive was God’s Pantry Food Bank. The Lexington nonprofit steers an array of initiatives aimed at battling hunger, and the “Stamp out Hunger” drive presented another opportunity to further their cause. Last year, the organization received a whopping 26,000 pounds of food from this single event.

Beneficiaries of the Food Drive

Other local agencies that benefited from the food drive were the Catholic Action Center and Lighthouse Ministries. This food drive initiative collectively enhances the local efforts to combat rising food costs in the face of the economic difficulties experienced by many families.

The actions taken on Saturday have significantly contributed towards relieving food scarcity issues that persist within Kentucky. With the support of the community and organizations like God’s Pantry Food Bank, the state steps closer to eradicating hunger among its residents.
