Massive Turnout at 24-Hour DanceBlue Marathon
Lexington, Ky. – DanceBlue, the yearly 24-hour dance marathon aimed at raising both funds and awareness for cancer patients at Kentucky Children’s Hospital’s Hematology and Oncology clinic, experienced an immense turnout this year. Each dancer laced up their shoes with a different rationale for participation – be it in support of a loved one, out of sheer curiosity, or as an act of solidarity.
Why They Dance
Luke Karem, a Public Relations Coordinator and DanceBlue participant, initially stepped onto the dancefloor out of a personal connection to the cause. “I began participating after my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Witnessing his struggle firsthand made me acutely aware of the harsh reality faced by these children,” Karem shared.
Multiplying By The Many
A first-time dancer, Caroline Sumner, was drawn to the event by the large crowd and robust community. “The atmosphere is inspiring,” she gushed. “To witness such a sizable group of college students, each fueled by their passion for the cause, truly instills hope.”
More Than Just Dance
While the massive dance-off remains the highlight of the event, there’s more to DanceBlue than just the performances. Each participant understands the gravity of their contribution. Each step they take, each song they sway to, has the potential to impact lives and instigate real change. “We believe that every dollar raised brings us closer to our aim – to touch, change, and potentially save the lives of children battling cancer in and around Kentucky,” Karem added.
Where The Funds Go
Proceeds from the event are allocated to cover essential needs for the patients and their families, such as accommodations, gas, and food. A portion is also set aside for research purposes, in hopes of yielding medical and technological advancements that can combat the disease.
Year-Round Donations
For those unable to attend or participate in the annual marathon, donations can be made at any time through the DanceBlue website.
Saluting The Bluegrass Spirit
This year’s turnout is a testimony to the vitality of the DanceBlue movement and the supportive Bluegrass community. An act as simple as dancing for 24 hours metamorphoses into a massive philanthropic endeavor thanks to the spirit of every participant. Through events like the DanceBlue marathon, we inch closer to a world where cancer is a battle more easily won.
