UK Board of Trustees Approves Resolution Redefining Governance
Key Highlights and Achievements Reflect a promising Transition for UK’s Future
The University of Kentucky (UK) held a significant Board of Trustees meeting on February 23, 2024 where a critical resolution was passed that could redefine the university’s Senate Council structure and direction. The resolution was passed with the majority of votes, marking a significant alteration in the way the university will be governed henceforth.
Project Accelerate: The Aim and Objective
The resolution adopted by the Board of Trustees is part of a broader agenda known as ‘Project Accelerate,’ outlined by UK President Eli Capilouto. In an email to the university community on February 28, he stated that the mission of this project is to accelerate the advancement of the university. Capilouto emphasized the need for a clear and streamlined decision-making process, citing current challenges and ambiguities.
Britt Brockman, board chair, supported the resolution stating, “We can streamline our roles and create more clarity where there is currently ambiguity and confusion.”
Faculty Trustee Votes Against the Resolution
The adoption of the resolution was not without dissent. Hollie Swanson, a faculty trustee, voted against it claiming a lack of clear evidence supporting the initiative. She also raised concerns about the lack of time given to contemplate the implications of the proposal.
Despite Swanson’s opposition, Capilouto assured that the university’s faculty would retain the “most important voice when it comes to curriculum” adjustments and the teaching methodologies will remain unaltered. He also announced plans to hold future meetings with different groups from the university, staff, and student senates.
Reflecting on University’s Achievements and Future
The meeting also served as a platform to celebrate the university’s 159th Founders Day. President Capilouto took the opportunity to reflect on UK’s achievements in recent years during his presidency. The Board of Trustees also welcomed the new faculty trustee, Hubie Ballard, who was elected with a strong 56.3% voter turnout.
