The City of Lexington once again gears for an exciting sustainability initiative with the commencement of its second annual campaign promoting the use of solar equipment, ‘Solarize Lexington’. Launched initially in 2023, this unique campaign made groundbreaking achievements by facilitating the installation of over 70 solar arrays across the city in its debut year.
To combat the escalating concerns regarding carbon footprints and fast-depleting fossil resources, ‘Solarize Lexington’ galvanizes citizens towards adopting solar energy alternatives. According to reliable city reports, the campaign managed to negotiate discounts as big as 15% off the wholesale price of solar equipment last year.
Jada Griggs, the senior program manager for sustainability in Lexington city, elucidating the initiative, stated, “We procured an RFP, received pertinent replies from various installers and then vetted them carefully. The process algorithm is designed to offer step by step assistance to homeowners, thus eliminating guesswork and complexities associated with going solar.”
Although primarily targeted at homeowners, ‘Solarize Lexington’ extends its benefits to small businesses, non-profits, and churches. According to Griggs, several participants have witnessed their electric bill’s usage segment plummet to zero after installing solar panels. “Despite an upfront pricing investment, it gets entirely offset post 10-12 years,” she affirmed. “Post this period, you effectively start savings – recouping all the initial amounts invested.”
Low-income individuals making less than 80% of the median income can avail city grants, while federal tax credits are open to all solar equipment purchasers.
In a world increasingly alarmed by the climatic change impacts, initiatives such as ‘Solarize Lexington’ are not only highly commendable but crucially essential. By promoting solar energy adoption, the campaign innovatively marries economic benefits with sustainability goals- a win-win deal for Lexington’s denizens and the entire Earth.
