Anticipation Builds for KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena

As the state of Kentucky gears up for the 2024 edition of the KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena in Lexington. All eyes are keenly watching the key players and teams likely to make their mark through the tournament.

KHSAA RPI and Enrollment Breakdown

Great Crossing, with an RPI of .72104, is currently ranked No. 1 in the state, followed by Newport (.69303), Harlan County (.69148), and Lyon County (.68200), respectively. The other participating teams in the Top 10 include Evangel Christian, Trinity, Ashland Blazer, Campbell County, and Adair County.

In terms of school size, Great Crossing, with an enrollment of 1,713 students, holds the top spot. It closely followed by Campbell County (1,546) and Trinity (1,261). Smaller schools such as Lyon County (293) and Evangel Christian (37), have also made their way into the tournament, showcasing the diversity and range in this exciting competition.

Winning Streaks and Scoring Stats

Looking at current winning streaks, Newport leads with 24 games, followed by Great Crossing with 22, and both Campbell County and Lyon County are on a similar 12-game winning streak. High-power scoring offenses like Lyon County (averaging 85.7 ppg), Butler County (76.6 ppg), and Harlan County (76.5 ppg) will make the tournament exciting to watch.

On the defensive side, Newport leads the state, allowing only 48.7 ppg. Trinity and Great Crossing also have robust defensive records, keeping their opponents to an average of 50.2 and 50.9 points per game, respectively.

Players to Watch

The Sweet 16 will also be featuring some of the state’s top-ranked players. Trent Noah from Harlan County tops the list of scorers with an average of 29.7 ppg, closely followed by Ty Price of Butler County (29.6 ppg) and Travis Perry of Lyon County (29.5 ppg).

On the boards, Malachi Moreno of Great Crossing is the state’s 7th best, pulling down an average of 13 rebounds per game. Lawson Rice of Butler County and Trent Noah picked up 10.9 and 10.5 rebounds per game, respectively, placing them among the top rebounders in the state.

As for shooters from range, Travis Perry from Lyon County made the most three-pointers, with 170 successful shots beyond the arc. He is followed by Ty Price of Butler County with 143 triples and Luke Erhardt from Spencer County with 110 successful attempts.
